Note: The below is an archived entry from Earthling, formerly EarthLink's official blog. The blog itself has been decommissioned and is no longer updated, and comments are trackbacks are no longer accepted.
Note: I wasn't at EarthLink for most of this, so I'm going through the history as I've come to understand it.
EarthLink first got its feet wet in corporate blogging with the Protection Blog. The Protection Blog's goal was to provide the company with a new way to communicate on a subject that it takes very seriously -- computer and internet security.
It was something of an experiment, and quickly outgrew the technical limitations of its testing area. It couldn't support comment functionality where it was without some painful heavy lifting. And once it caught the blogging bug, EarthLink wanted to expand the focus to cover lots of other subjects.
At that point, it made sense to start again with a new site, new requirements, and a new approach. They decided to hire a dedicated, full-time blogger, and put the new blog within a hosting environment that would allow for more features and interactivity. And that's where I came in.
My background is in content development (development with a small d like "making of" not a big D like "programming"). When I saw the job posting, it leapt off of the page and tried to strangle me. It embodied just the kind of challenge I really enjoy. Editorializing slightly, here are the goals of the job as I see them: Get readers. Be useful to them. Write about EarthLink's projects, culture, and people. Write about what interests you on the web. Help people learn to use the technologies around them. Have conversations, and engage with people.
So here I am and here’s Earthling. We’ll be keeping the archived Protection Blog content around for your reference, but ultimately that project will be folded in to this one.
We also considered creating not one but several blogs, organized by subject matter. But my feeling is that at least for right now, EarthLink really needs one blog -- one unified presence -- that's free to talk about lots of different things. We might splinter off different subject areas into their own blogs later, or add some completely new and different blogs. But for now, it makes more sense to bring people to one place and let them find what they like best from there. If you find that you like one category better than the others, let me know. You can also subscribe to each category as its own RSS feed. You'll find rss buttons next to each category in the "Browse by: Category" box on the home page.
I'm hoping to implement a keyword tagging system soon, so that readers can navigate by subject matter (voip, browsers, ice cream cones, etc.) in addition to by story type through the categories (how-to, bests, etc.). If you have any other suggestions, drop me a line.

What is going to happen to the protection blog?

Thanks Ashley and Chris. And anonymous.
We'll make the Protection Blog's archived content available here, and will continue to cover protection-related issues here from time to time as well.

Obviously earthlink's blog development lead to a great resource for all to enjoy. It is amazing how many different inventions come out of the need to communicate with each other.
