I've seen a few articles online this morning suggesting that EarthLink is getting out of the municipal Wi-Fi business. This is not the case. After checking with our leadership this morning, I want to confirm two points:
Electronics accessories manufacturer Belkin impressed me in two ways recently.
A great unconference puts the focus on the people, and makes it as easy as possibly for all of the participants to meet, learn, and share with each other. If you haven't done it before, it probably sounds like a schmoozefest. But really at each of the unconferences I've participated in(and BlogPhilly was no exception) I've found the vast majority of conversations both in sessions and in the hallways, restaurants, and bars to be exceedingly human and useful.
I had an excellent time last week at the BlogPhiladelphia conference and in the short time I had to see some of Philly itself. In this entry I wanted to provide a short wrap-up of the session I led and some links, and then in the next one I'll list out some of the participants I met at the conference. Needless to say if you are not into the inside baseball of corporate blogging, don't worry; I'll return to more general Earthling stuff shortly.
I'm headed out to BlogPhiladelphia this afternoon. I'm no stranger to the allure of the Cheesesteak, but this will be my first time in Philly since our Municipal Wi-Fi network buildout began. I 'm looking forward to meeting lots of Philly bloggers including BlogPhiladelphia's intrepid organizer, Annie Heckenberger.
This morning EarthLink announced that Wireless Philadelphia has approved our 15 square mile Proof of Concept(POC) area, and given us the green light to continue to build out the full 135 square miles of network.
At close range, this pole will look a little bit different tomorrow. Hints: it's in Philadelphia, and it's on 17th Street, and some people from EarthLink will be there. And no, we're not stapling a flyer to it.
Last week was a busy one for Municipal Wi-Fi. In addition to the New Orleans announcement, there was also good news in Philadelphia where mayor John Street held a signing ceremony that officially put the plan for EarthLink to unwire Philadelphia into action.
