Let's Get Serious About Making RSS Friendlier

In the larger world of making RSS reading a better experience for regular folks, there's a lot more like this that needs to come together. Reading about the AideRSS system lit up a line of thinking that's been brewing for a while. There are three issues I see on the RSS Reader side with current strategies to help you curb information overload:

When The News River Is Swollen And Teeming

Reader is still a daily addiction for me, but it could be much better. I think there's still a huge opportunity for ours -- how about if we dedicated ourselves to making it the most stress-free and encouraging environment out there for getting through your morning's work?

What Got You In The Door With RSS?

If you're reading this via RSS right now and know it, what was your first experience with anything having to do with RSS? Why did you decide to take the plunge and start actually using it? Did someone explain it to you, did you read an article, did you have it forced upon you by work or an overzealous nerd friend? Did someone show you something about it that made you stand up and take notice?

Consider These Blogs

I've seen this in a few places now and wanted to make sure you all have seen it as well. It's a list of some lesser-known but really good blogs. There are more suggestions in the comments there, and if you have any additional hidden gems to suggest, feel free to slide them over in the comments below.

Now Recently Updated Lives On myEarthLink Too

There's now a way to keep an eye on the sources in your Reader from your myEarthLink Start Page. The new Reader widget shows you all of your recently updated Reader feeds at a glance. It's a similar view to what you get on the side within Reader itself, and when you click a source it takes you to that source's content in Reader.

Classroom RSS and Edublog Round-up

A couple of weeks ago, Earthling reader John Blake asked for some more ideas about how teachers are using RSS and podcasting as part of their classroom practice. I'm fairly new to blogs about tech in the classroom, so I spent some time searching to see what I could dig up. It turns out I find this stuff pretty fascinating. I got a little far afield of the specific question of RSS in the classroom, but I found so many interesting links that I decided to broaden this round-up. Below you'll find a list of miscellaneous resources I found about tools, theory, and techniques for making best use of current web technologies in the classroom:

How Do You Use RSS In The Classroom?

Earthling reader and edublogger John Blake sent me a really interesting write-up of the ways he's incorporated personal publishing and RSS into his classroom practice. He's also wondering how other teachers have used it in their curricula, so I wanted to publish what he sent me and throw it open to any other teachers who'd like to share their ideas. In the meantime I'll do some research as well and help develop a list of resources. Please add any suggestions, anecdotes, and stories to the comments of this blog entry.

50 Percent of Moms of Guys Named Dave Use RSS

I was eating lunch and chatting during a break at the BlogHer conference this past weekend, and who did I spy over my right shoulder but RSS/OPML developer Dave Winer. Dave gave Reader a good review a couple of weeks ago, and I took the opportunity to thank him in person, and ask for more feedback.

Framing Reader

The letters RSS can bring anxiety (or blank stares) to many. Our goal with reader was to expose the idea of reading feeds instead of web sites to many more people than know about it today, and do it in a way that doesn't give anybody nightmares. At it's best, an experience with a feed reader should remove several steps in your quest to stay connected with your friends, colleagues, and the world around you. It should bring you information and entertaining content that you didn't know was out there. And it shouldn't bring on additional anxiety. It's an exciting space because it's still new and wide open. No one has yet defined the ideal RSS reading experience, and in fact one size may not fit all.

Cat's Out Of The Bag on Reader and myFavorites

Yes, it's true. We've quietly exposed a new RSS reader and social bookmarking application to a small subset of our users.

Blog Via E-mail: My Blogger's House Has Many Rooms

I added another small feature today in addition to the anti-spam measures (which seem to be working) -- a way to receive Earthling via e-mail. You can see it over there on the right. In a somewhat roundabout way, I...

How To Use Your Pre-existing Tools To Try Personal Publishing

If you already have an AOL Instant Messenger, Jabber, Yahoo Messenger, or MSN Messenger account (Sean, how about supporting MindSpring?), you've got what you need to dip your toe into the personal publishing world. If you also already have a blog or web site presence, this how-to can benefit you as well.

Seeking An RSS Reader For The Rest Of Us

EarthLink's Director of Web Applications Gregg Hartling borrows Earthling to share some thoughts about RSS readers, inspired by today's TechCrunch article: "I read through today's excellent TechCrunch review of web-based feed readers with great interest. I've been championing RSS at...

Bee Kind - Update Your Earthling Feed

Hello you. I've updated my RSS feed address, so if you currently read Earthling through RSS, please unsubscribe from the old address and subscribe to this one: http://feeds.feedburner.com/EarthlingBlog I've changed the buttons on the right of the home page to reflect the new address too. If you don't currently read Earthling through RSS and think you might want to, here's how.

How To Get Your Arms Around RSS

In simple terms, RSS, or Really Simple Syndication, is the key part of a system for receiving some or all of a web site's content somewhere else. That somewhere else could be a special web site, a part of your web browser, or a separate application on your computer. So far you can't read RSS feeds on the back of a cereal box or on your naked arm, but give M.I.T. some time and they'll make it happen.

Feed Subscription

If you use an RSS reader, you can subscribe to a feed of all future entries tagged 'RSS'. [What is this?]
