Separately/Together And EarthLink Montage

Late last week EarthLink made available a beta version of Montage, a new, free email/RSS/address book suite for Windows XP and Vista. It's a desktop application that lets you handle multiple email accounts along with RSS feeds and podcasts, all with a unified interface and organization system.

BlogPhilly Bound

I'm headed out to BlogPhiladelphia this afternoon. I'm no stranger to the allure of the Cheesesteak, but this will be my first time in Philly since our Municipal Wi-Fi network buildout began. I 'm looking forward to meeting lots of Philly bloggers including BlogPhiladelphia's intrepid organizer, Annie Heckenberger.

Ocean In One Hand, iPhone In The Other

Weekend blog entries are fairly rare for me, but I wanted to write up some thoughts about my first day with the iPhone while they're fairly fresh in my mind. Now that I have both an Ocean and an iPhone in my hands, I'm well equipped to start thinking about how they stack up side-by-side.

Fittingly Wild Ending To A Wild iPhone Day

By around 5:00 pm, with the AT&T store doors shuttered, and everyone waiting expectantly in line, people started to notice that the entire shopping center we were in had lost power. After lots of murmuring in the crowd, the rumor was that a nearby car had struck a light pole and knocked out power around us. After several nervous visits from AT&T store employees out to the line, the store manager came out and informed us that Georgia Power was working on the problem, and they expected it to be fixed at 7 pm. He was very apologetic and appreciative of the time we'd all been waiting. And we all hunkered down to wait again.

Lunchtime On The iPhone Line

Just wolfed down a Publix sub, charged up the laptop batteries, and am hitting the internets for a quick update. Here's a wider shot as well: I just saw on Twitter that there are 185+ people at the Lenox Mall...

Probably Still A Decent iPhone Chance At Cascade Road

So if you want a good shot at it here in Metro Atlanta, I'd come on down here to the AT & T corporate store on Cascade Road as soon as you can:

Metro Atlanta iPhone Waiting Lines Update

As it turns out, the security guy here is coordinating iPhone release security for all of Fulton County, and was kind enough to give us a quick rundown of what he's heard about the other stores. He says there are significant lines at Atlantic Station, Lenox Mall, Briarcliff Rd., Roswell, and Camp Creek. So safe to say we're not at any of those places. And there's no line here so far except for myself and Ken, Brandon.

Five Accounted For So Far

iPhones one through four will be bought by Brandon and his family. Brandon drew waiting duty in the family, and he and his sisters will all be on the family plan. The AT&T store folks said they'd honor the family...

So far...

iPhoning It In Today

The Earthling team, which pretty much comprises my manager Ken Womack and myself, are heading to an undisclosed location in the Metro Atlanta area this morning to try and secure a spot in line to nab an iPhone for EarthLink. Once we feel secure that we're well positioned to take one home today, I'll disclose that location and let you know what the line looks like, in case you're in Atlanta and thinking about spending some time standing around doing not much of anything.

A Best for the iTunes Store

I hadn't noticed that there was a minor flaw in my video download. (I think) Apple decided it was worth it to point out to everyone who downloaded the episode, whether or not they complained or noticed. The fact that Apple pointed it out to me even though I didn't complain doesn't make me think any less of them. On the contrary, it shows they care about delivering the product they intend to deliver.

MacWorld Keynote Coverage

I may be at CES right now, but everyone here and elsewhere is watching Apple announce the new iPhone/widescreen iPod device over at MacWorld. You can catch the tail end in text updates here.

More on The Masked Blogger at Apple and Anonymity

I think anonymous blogging can be as divisive to a company's culture as it can be a force for positive change. When there's no accountability for what's being said and no one knows whether or not the person they're talking to will be writing up their conversation as part of a larger crusade about the company, I think that can set collaboration and conversation back a few steps rather than advance it. I think blogging under a real identity creates a possible position of advocacy, but it's almost impossible to be a true advocate if no one knows who you are.

MacBook Pro: Trusted Old Friend Or Inappropriately Friendly Stranger?

I've been wondering which computer to buy if I replace my aging Apple iBook any time soon. Should I go with the brand new MacBook Pro, wait for more Apple news, or look for a good price on last year's Powerbooks? Macworld published first looks at the MacBook this week, but what I'm really interested in is something that only Miss Cleo or insider information can tell you.
