MIT had their home page hacked today around noon, with their URLs redirecting to a webpage claiming credit for the attack in remembrance of Aaron Swartz, a founder of popular site Reddit.com (see graphic, which is a screen shot of the page before it was returned to normal).
The hack affected all names under mit.edu, including web.mit.edu, tech.mit.edu, (etc) and was meant to be a memorial to Mr. Swartz, who recently committed suicide.
While people have their own views on Aaron Swartz’s life (and death), most agree that this was not the way to show respect. One positive may have come out of this, however, as a rep for MIT has said that they will now up their security as a response.
