« Graduating From Preview | Main | Introducing "Inline Reg" »

If there's something on your start page that bugs you, I have some good news. With today's release, you can now remove any of the features on the middle of the page (Email Preview, News & Updates, Entertainment and Shopping). If you change your mind, it's easy to add everything back again later.

To give one of these features the boot, mouse over the upper right-hand corner of the box. A trash can icon will show up. Click on the trash can, and the feature will vanish.

For example, if you wanted to remove the Entertainment feature, you would click on the trash can here:

After you click the trash can, Entertainment will disappear and a new link ("Entertainment") will appear at the bottom of the page, under the text "More myEarthLink Features (Click to add)." To add the feature to your page again, you would simply click on the word "Entertainment."

Note that you can also remove any of the sites in the Favorite Sites list on the left side of the page. This has been in place since we launched, but I've heard from a few of you who weren't sure how to got about removing a site. To ax something in this area, click "customize" at the top or bottom of the Favorite Sites box. You'll see a trash can icon next to every one of the sites.

Click the trash can next to a site to remove it from your list.

At this point, you can't chuck the features in the dock at the top of the page (weather, stocks, reminders, sports scores and internet security). But rest assured, we are planning to make these features removable as well, later this summer.

Comments

The old start page was bad enough. It would not let you get rid of the bar of junk at the top (ebay, marketplace, travel, etc), the tab bar of trash (web, local, images, shopping and Earthlink), nothing at all from the next to totally useless left column, the garbage panels ("Today at Earthlink" and "Add a Feature") or the abysmally wasteful second page.

The new page also has totally useless nonsense. The tab bar of trash is still there. The large icons are unable to be altered to something meaningful or disposed of. There are those of us who think sports is a waste of bandwidth and media airtime. The "myEarthlink Channels" does not have a single thing of interest. And the useless button that says, "Tell us what you think". A click on it does absolutely nothing. In addition, the "More myEarthlink Features" has additional gobbledygook. Spending bandwidth sending this is appalling, not to mention my time wasted waiting on it.

When will the page be able to be arranged to our personal tastes? The "More myEarthlink Features" needs to be expanded tremendously. How about categories such as Astronomy, Science, Technology, Education, Computers (hardware, programming, operating systems, etc.), Digital Photography, Graphics Design and so forth?

Hi David,

Sorry to hear you've run into some trouble with the start page.

Clicking the "Tell us what you think" button should create a new email message (using your default email program) addressed to our feedback email address, ngpfeedback@lists.corp.earthlink.net. Settings on your computer could disable this behavior, however.

We will be rolling out more customization features over the next few months. In the meantime, to add content on a wider range of subjects, try customizing the News and Updates feature. This post explains how it works.

Hi! I just noticed the blog and want to comment on the above statement from David. I whole heartedly agree with him. I would like to see my local news return. I have put in my zip code and nothing happens. The comment states that it will get it. So my question is when?? Also, I would like to delete a lot of stuff off the Myearthlink.net page as I feel this is my personal page and I don't want a lot of advertisements on it and I want just what I need not what earthlink seems to feel I need. A personal page is just that "personal" to my way of looking at it. Thank you.

Hi Quinn,

You should be able to add local news today. Click the "Add/Edit" link in the News and Update feature, and enter your zipcode or city name into the field at the bottom of the feature. This post includes a walk-through.

I have a question about the new "Reminders" function. It seems I am not able to go back into it to edit or delete a reminder if I make a typo or enter incorrect information. Is ths function available? It was possible in the earlier version. Can you help?

Hi Cary,

To remove a reminder, click the Reminders button in the dock, then drag your cursor over the reminder you want to delete. You should see a little trash can icon pop up. Click the trash can, and that reminder will disappear. It's not possible to edit the text at this time, but we'll look at that as a possibility for a future update.

Thank you,

- Tom
