Note: The below is an archived entry from Earthling, formerly EarthLink's official blog. The blog itself has been decommissioned and is no longer updated, and comments are trackbacks are no longer accepted.
My name is Dave Coustan, and I'm EarthLink's newly hired full-time blogger. This thing you seem to be reading is a new blog called Earthling. You'll find two kinds of entries here -- some about what goes on at EarthLink, and some about things that interest me on the web.
My aim is to write here in a way that doesn't make a lot of demands on you as a reader. Other than reading, of course. I hate blogs that make you feel like you're not part of the "in" crowd and can't possibly understand the complexities of what they are talking about. One thing I learned, grudgingly, from my time as a writer at HowStuffWorks is that there's no excuse for confusing explanations. Even the most complicated topic can be broken down so that a smart fourteen-year-old can get it. Except, maybe, holograms.
I've carved Earthling up in to six main categories to start:
- Bests: Exemplary products and services worth checking out -- and not
just EarthLink stuff. - Round-ups: Little capsule summaries of big subjects, with ideas for where to go for more.
- Experiments: Real-world tests, reviews, and shenanigans. Anything that involves applying the scientific method.
- @EarthLink: Covering the EarthLink beat. Ideas, new projects, anecdotes from the people who work here, requests for feedback.
- How-tos: Brief, simple, step-by-step guides to getting the most out of the technologies around you.
- Thoughts: This is a catch-all for anything that doesn't fit the other five. Mostly links, ideas, discussions.
Those are my best guesses for types of content I can offer on a regular basis. I reserve the right to change or remove any of them if they become cumbersome, boring, or vastly unpopular.
Here are some of the ways you can become a part of this: I can be reached via email at earthling at corp.earthlink.net, via aol instant messenger at earthling1375, or you can always post a comment on any of the entries you see here. I suppose you could also talk about me on your blog, complain on the phone to your mom, or carve a comment into your homeroom desk.
If you do have a comment, suggestion, piece of advice, or just something to say, please don’t hesitate to get in touch. I’ll do my best to personally answer all emails and comments as long as they don’t come from space or robots. Oh, and do follow the ground rules.
In an upcoming entry, I'll explain how this project came about, and after that we can get down to some regular Earthling business. I already have a backlog of things I'd like to talk about.
Comments
Dave,
The blog looks great.
I look forward to reading more...

I need reading to be demanding. I want it to tell me to do the dishes or to clean my room.
Furthermore, I am demanding and I need you to tell me all about Space Travel. Thank you!!

Howdy, I am real new at all this stuff. This being my offical first computer, first email adress, so my question is simple. Who, What When Where, and Why? Oh yeah I want a job like yours.

It's great to hear from you all.
Travis, your support is appreciated.
Peglet, how's this for being demanding of you -- send more postcards please.
Leisa-Ann, I'm very pleased that you find the text readable. I saw your comment while I was at the CES and it made my day. Let me know if anything changes on that. No matter what I do, my eyes get sore from reading my laptop screen all day.
Sharon, glad to hear from you. How can I help? What would you like to know first?
Posted by earthling | January 10, 2006 12:59 PM
For Leisa-Ann:
If you hit start, settings, control panel, internet options, then accessibility (at the bottom), and check the box that says "ignore font sizes specified on web pages", you can control the font size on your computer with the wheel on your mouse. Press down on the wheel to make the adjustment. It sure helps me read the small print!
Posted by 67Bill | January 17, 2006 4:19 PM
Another way to enlarge font size: start, programs, accessibility, magnifier. It acts like a magnifying glass you can control over the page. Also a big help to those of us plagued by tiny font size.

Hi Dave. Nice blog. As a current Earthlink Bkackberry user, I would like a full explanation regarding the cessation of Blackberry device sales by Earthlink. I would also like to know how long Earthlink will support these devices. I am refering to the new (4/05) Blackberry 7250 devices, not the old 957 devices. When these PDAs were rolled out by Earthlink in April, 2005, a big deal was made of the desire to expand Earthlink's Blackberry user base. Stopping sales of the device, and not informing users of future intentions is not a good way to go about this. With Earthlink and RIM both being big players in the wireless email market, I would consider this to be news worthy of any tech weblog.
Thanks.

Well hello, hello I'm not your ordinary blogeenie so I'll just try to keep this meaningless, ostentatious, bloviating and simple. How do you get lots of visitors to come see what you've been working on so hard and tiringly long?? I dunno, but, I'm open for any suggestions. (keep it clean now)

I am having a technical problem that the Earthlink suppport people have NOT been able to fix. Perhaps someone on this blog will be able to help.
I am a dial-up customer. When I connect, I get a random number of my own start pages opening up. This can be any number from 2 to about 8, but it has gone higher. EL Support has not been able to recommend a fix for this. I am using three separate Sypyware programs: 1) The Earthlink supplied product; 2) Microsoft Antispyware Beta; 3) Spybot.
In addition, I run the McAfee virus protection product.
Does anyone have a suggestion on how to stop multiple Start-Pages from openiing when I connect?
Thank you very much.

67 Bill: Thanks for providing the tips!
Darryl: Thank you for posting a comment on the blog. I appreciate your concerns.
As far as your specific questions about which products will be supported, I'm looking in to them for you.
As far as the more general concerns, I'd like you to e-mail me at earthling (at) blogs.earthlink.net with as much detail as you can, and I'll pass it along to the relevant parties.
I want to emphasize that I can't guarantee that any specific action will be taken as a result, but at least I can help pass your thoughts along.
Bob: Thanks for your patience. I've spoken to the Call Center team and they've looked up your case. They feel your problem is solvable and would like to continue to investigate it. They suggest working with them via telephone if possible to get to the bottom of it.

Hi again Darryl - I've shared your comment with the Wireless folks and I have some information to pass along. This is from Greg Roberts, Senior Director of Marketing Strategy:
--
Thank you for your note. EarthLink Wireless made a strategic decision
to discontinue the sales of the Blackberry product for one main reason:
our EarthLink customers told us they were interested in other wireless
products. Part of our success as a company has been listening to our
customers and providing products and services that best fit their needs.
In this particular instance, our loyal EarthLink customer base has
indicated it's time to shift our product portfolio to cater to more
general wireless products, thus we recently introduced the Samsung A560
wireless phone that, initially, has been very well received.
EarthLink Wireless will continue to support our Blackberry customers
with exceptional technical support and customer service. Customer
satisfaction is very important to us and our Blackberry and Treo
customers will continue to experience the high level of support that we
offer today.

Hi Dave. Thanks very much for the information. And please pass along my gratitude to Greg Roberts for taking time to respond. There are Blackberry users at BlackberryForums.com who will be very interested in this news. Those Blackberry users who have Earthlink as their service provider will be glad to hear that Earthlink will continue to support its Blackberry customers. Thanks again for your help.

I have a question regarding the 2006 political campaigns taking place around the nation. Is this blog considered an appropriate forum for such discussion?
Posted by T | January 26, 2006 9:45 AM
Sherree: Welcome to Earthling.
T: Thanks for your question. Nah, this thread is definitely not about politics, and I doubt if I'll have a reason to cover politics on Earthling at all.

Thanks for the easier way to ask questions! Mine is a simple one: how much longer before EL supports Mozilla's Firefox browser? I've heard there is a move afoot and I grow weary of hearing "El doesn't offer support for Firefox or Thunderbird".
FYI I'm a long time customer with practically the first EL DSL line in Houston and I brag all the time how good my service has always been. TIA for your reply.

Yes, please let us use Firefox. You just can't compare it to IE. It's easy and fun and exciting.
Posted by Mary G | January 29, 2006 6:47 AM
Hi Edie and Mary,
Thanks for the comments, and thank you for reading the blog.
Which EarthLink products and services are you finding don't work with Firefox? I'd be curious to hear, as I am a Firefox user as well. As far as the my.EarthLink portal, it's tested against Firefox and should work well.
As a note to everyone with specific questions or suggestions for topics I could cover, please send them via e-mail rather than leaving them as comments.
I'm glad to hear from all of you, and I've let this comment thread grow since it's the first one and we're all learning. But I'd like to keep comments for discussing the entry they are attached to.

Hi Brenda,
Thanks for a good question. I'm going to write a blog entry about this. Look for it on the home page, and I'll also post a link to it right here.
In the meantime, you might start at by looking at the tutorials on the EarthLink Personal Support Center. Try the "Browsing The Web" tutorial.
*Update: Here's an entry I've written about your question. Let's see what suggestions other readers might have.

This is totally new to me. I am amazed that I acutally found this site. My main goal is to get everyone to go to my website and buy my books. I am a new author. Is this okay to write? I told you I am a novice at this.
Posted by Vicki | March 22, 2006 12:51 PM
Hi GypsyMoon,it sounds like you have adware on your computer that needs to be removed,if you don't have Earthlink's Protection Controll Center installed on your computer, you can download it from the Earthlink Site, then you can scann your computer and remove all adware/spyware.
Posted by Larry | March 24, 2006 10:07 AM
Larry: Thanks for the hand. Do you work for us? Somehow GypsyMoon's comment slipped past me in a flurry of comment spam. Here's a link straight to the Protection Control Center:
http://www.earthlink.net/software/pcc/.
I'll e-mail GypsyMoon as well.
Vicki: thanks for your comment and I'm glad you found Earthling! I do ask that you not promote money-making products and services in the comments. I'm going to leave your comment up there and just delete the URL.
Here are the ground rules, fyi: http://blogs.earthlink.net/the_ground_rules.php

Earthling,no I don't work for Earthlink, but I have used your internet services( DSL ) for about three years now,and I am very happy with it. The Protection Controll Center is a great multi-tool,and itworks great, everyone who has Earthlink's Internet Service should use it.

Yes How Do I Get started Making A Blog?
Posted by Lisa | May 9, 2006 2:14 AM
Hello,
Testing out this new blog thing. I really like the name of "Earthling" very "trekkie". I haven't read all the comments as yet, but will check out this page every so often. Would like to know how many new "bloggers" like me are out there - let me know. Signing off: Brig-Bow

Lisa:
You could set up a free one at www.wordpress.com or www.blogger.com . Both sites will walk you through the process with some step-by-step instructions. If you get stuck, let me know.
Brig-Bow: Glad you found Earthling. If you want to check on what's newest here, come to the main page each day, which is http://blogs.earthlink.net . And if you'd like to set up your own place to post your thoughts, look at those two sites I wrote about above.

what is a blog? Did I just do one?
Posted by D.S.Koemme | May 11, 2006 4:52 PM
D.S.: Nope, you just commented on someone else's blog.
A blog is just a particular kind of web site, that has dated entries and usually shows them in reverse-chronological order, newest first.

Help with song lyrics/translation
I've checked all the usual sites but I must have missed one:)
I have the soundtrack from the movie, Munich (Spielberg, 2005) and I am looking for the lyrics, and translation of lyrics, for the song:
"Munich, 1972" - its sung in the opening credits - composed by John Williams - not sure of singer's name but its a woman
Please help if you can either send the lyrics and translation here or give me John Williams phone number (maybe he knows) give a direct link to a site because I'm tired of slogging through (mostly) misleading lyric sites. It gets weary. I appreciate any of the above possible ways of assistance.
THANK YOU.

HOW DO YOU OPEN A DVD CASE WITHOUT CRACKING THE DVD?
I admit, I was born before most homes had televisions.
Therefore (???) I have never been able to open a CD without injuring at least one finger, wrist, arm or if my aim is really bad anywhere else.
NOW I opened a DVD movie and broke the DVD just trying to get the sucker outta there. Whats with that? Secure is nice but this is worse than prescription bottles labelled "keep away from children" but only children can open them.
I've opened other DVD movie cases without breaking them or myself. I had a terrible time getting them out of that round holder with the indentations for supposedly assisting the fingers to eject DVD from case.
By the way I have no idea what most of these entries are about but you sound like you are all having fun. I just feel lucky each time my PC responds to a command like "open" "close" "sign out" "quit" "cancel". I'm a basic kind of person. I'm lost with most anything else. Not that that matters. I just want to know how to get a DVD out of a case...sigh. I'll wait until next year to ask what kind of DVD I need to buy to record a DVD in my DVD player. I am instruction manual phobic besides being old.

Ques.:
Will Erthlk ever consider providing a service (at no extra cost) that will allow you to be on the net and still place phone calls on the same phone line connection? Sorely needed here? Sorely!!

I took a risk and paid a little more than the "other"
going fees for earthlink. I thought...you get what you pay for and I am impressed. From my e-mail all the way to trellix site-builder I feel without investigation I could get no better technological answer to my basic cave-dweller needs. Thanx earthlink and best regards to the corporation and your continued efforts towards quality.

I am having trouble using Mozilla Thunderbird in conjunction with Earthlink. Does anybody know how to use the two together?
Posted by Michael | August 23, 2006 2:00 PM
Davida:
Although I would have to agree that many DVD cases are difficult to open , many just need to be pryed out in the right way. Usually you just need to press down the center button (the one that holds down disc) and the disc will pop out, as indicated on the case. If that doesn't work, you can attempt to remove it by again pressing the center button and trying to slip a fingernail under the side of the disc, pulling it off slowly.

Thanks for this site. My 1st time on a blog. I'm a very satisfied longterm customer. EL's growth in services over the years has been amazing. I have no plans to go elsewhere. Now I have a new site for learning--works well for an over the hill grunt like myself. EL has made the computer a easier tool to learn. Thank you

TRUSTABLE WEBSITES?? Pardon me for being new and akward about this/any blog stuff. I have tried looking for ways to tell if a site has integrity. Example: Word of mouth led me to a wonderful site for grants for college...unfortunetly a computer crash and a brain burp and I have yet to find that site ever again. And as I am sure all of you have experienced > been to many wanting $$$$ How do you tell if a site is reputable? Any information to an alternative version of the Better Bussiness Bureau to websites or crafty suggestions would deeply be appreciated. Bright Blessings!

I just learned the magic of Ctrl-plus(+) and Ctrl-minus(-) to control the base size of print on a web page. This has the advantage of letting all the different sizes of characters show up, they are just all magnified or reduced!

How do I Upload from another site to my site?
Posted by Edward Hamner | April 30, 2007 7:53 PM
I do have a blog site and am writing articles from personal opinions and I get some help from professionals when needed. I am enjoying the blog experience especially after last year when I had a heart attack and I did not know if I would even be alive this year. I am grateful for the chance to write articles as they are therapy for me.I am not at work anymore so this is a way to keep myself involved with the world. My kids are helping me with the workings of the computer. Ah! It's pay back time kids...Mom needs help!.
I just signed up for Earthlink and I know I will enjoy all it has to offer. Thanks for being out there.
