Note: The below is an archived entry from Earthling, formerly EarthLink's official blog. The blog itself has been decommissioned and is no longer updated, and comments are trackbacks are no longer accepted.
Back on February 21, EarthLink announced that we were submitting a joint proposal with Google to build a municipal wireless network in San Francisco. More background on the proposal process can be found here. Since then, we were also selected to build a Wi-Fi network in Milpitas, CA, and we answered New Orleans' call to help them keep their city Wi-Fi enabled.
This evening I received the exciting news that we've been selected to build the municipal wireless network for the City of San Francisco. Read on for an official statement from Executive Vice President Donald Berryman.
The following statement is attributed to Donald Berryman, executive vice president of EarthLink and president of the ISP’s municipal networks unit:
"We are thrilled that the San Francisco TechConnect Committee has selected the EarthLink proposal, and we look forward to taking the next step to negotiate a contract to build a municipal wireless broadband network. San Francisco is one of the most progressive cities in the world and our combined offerings with Google, Motorola and Tropos Networks will stretch the possibilities of what a mobile network can do for residents, businesses, municipal government and visitors. We look forward to getting started in building a solution that will bring the incredible possibilities to reality.”
If interested in scheduling an interview to discuss San Francisco or other EarthLink Municipal Network initiatives, please contact these representatives from the ISP’s public relations firm, Text 100: Fiona Doherty, 212.871.3927 or Chris Morse, 617.399.4981.

Congrats! I look forward to seeing the creativity flow.
Side Note: As a company, you guys are really embracing new media well. This blog is definitely one the most interesting corporate blogs (I love reading your takes on Net Neutruality & VOIP) and I keep hearing about you on podcasts left, right, & center.
Good job...you've managed to reach an unreachable university student.

why Wi-Fi?
why not HSDPA or WiBro.

Thanks for the kind words, Diane and anonymous university student.
yJ, I think in general we're picking the currrently available technologies that provide the best and most stable service for a broad set of applications. It's about building a useful, stable infrastructure that can be updated and evolved according to demand and interest as time goes on, rather than picking what's hottest now.

I can't imagine why anyone would award earthlink (or sprint dsl) any contract. We've been under contract with them for almost two years and the service has been horrible...service down, links down...email not available. Can't wait until our contract is up.
