Note: The below is an archived entry from Earthling, formerly EarthLink's official blog. The blog itself has been decommissioned and is no longer updated, and comments are trackbacks are no longer accepted.
Next week EarthLink DSL and Home Phone service will be expanding to the additional cities we announced back in March. This is the combination high-speed DSL and voice (VoIP) service that works through regular phone jacks with no adapters needed. I'll have more detail on this soon.
Update: Jon Van at the Chicago Tribune wrote a piece today about the service coming to Chicago.
Comments
Is this roll-out including Atlanta? I called the voice sales line today, and they didn't know anything about an upcoming Atlanta roll out of the Voice and DSL product.

The CNET article says: "Because the service is IP-based, customers will be able to take advantage of several enhanced features they wouldn't otherwise get with traditional phone services, such as call prioritization, click-to-dial, number blocking and Web-based voice mail." ( http://news.com.com/EarthLink+expands+VoIP+service/2100-7352_3-6114181.html?tag=nefd.top )
Is it really true that traditional phone services can not provide these services? Where can I get additional information regarding these services? I tried to look for it in your web site, but failed.
Thanks

Joseph: Atlanta is one of the cities DSL and home phone will be available in. I'll have more details as soon as the full announcement is made.
Aswath: That article is correct -- those are features that traditional, non-IP based phone service doesn't offer. I use the web-based voice mail feature with EarthLink TrueVoice at home, and haven't needed number blocking (thank goodness) but it's nice to know it's there. Can't wait until this gets to metro Denver!!! I am paying about the same for phone service as for DSL, and would LOVE to cut my bill in half!

EarthLink DSL and Home Phone service. Available in Atlanta? Nope, I don't think so. I can't get it in the burbs, but when I tried to find ANYONE who could get it, and could not!
Now lets be serious, here. You are listing the product in this market to impress your investors, but I don't think it is available, or ever will be. BellSouth OWNS this town, and absent some landmark legal decision that I've never heard about, they can keep insisting that DSL requires Bellsouth local telephone service. That's why its called a MONOPOLY.
Now would be a great time for existing Atlanta customers to chime in and say they are getting it. Anyone (not working for Earthlink)????

Keith,
I am the product manager for DSL and Home Phone Service and I wanted to follow up on your comment to clarify a few points that you made. We officially launched DSL and Home Phone Service in Atlanta last September and since then have been marketing the service and steadily increasing our customer base. The service is offered as a bundled service of both voice and DSL that is independent of having any type of service with BellSouth.
As for your question about coverage, we decided that in our first round of deployment we would first focus on markets within the perimeter and select high density areas outside of the perimeter. As we evaluate a second round of deployment, we are looking at expanding our coverage into other areas of Atlanta.
In the meantime, there is a link provide in our online store for customers that can not get DSL and Home Phone Service where they can indicate that they would like to be contacted once the service is available.
Thanks,
Michael

I have been with Earthlink since 1999. I cannot believe I'm paying $39 for 1.5 speed. Bellsouth has extreme 3.0 for $37. As for the bundled package, its ridiculous that its taking this long to get it here in the burbs of Atlanta. Noone can tell me why.
