File Manager Pro tool for EarthLink Web Hosting customersDo you need to edit one of the pages on your website? Do you need to create a new directory? Do you need to upload a new file?

Then you need to know about File Manager Pro.

The File Manager Pro is one of the many convenient and powerful tools that EarthLink Web hosting and Ecommerce hosting customers can use to manage and optimize their business website.

It allows you to take full control of your website files and is a safe alternative to full shell access, which is only recommended for technically proficient users.

File Manager Pro lets you copy, move, delete, rename and edit files, create and remove directories, change file permissions and upload files from your local computer to your website.

The tool is best used for files that have been previously uploaded to your website. To upload multiple files at once, you will probably want to use an FTP client.

Here’s how to get started with File Manager Pro:

  1. Sign into your Web Hosting Control Center at with your EarthLink Web Hosting domain name, username, and password.
  2. On the Manage Site tab, click the File Manager PRO button (shown above).
  3. Buttons on top of the new screen let you add a new directory, remove an existing directory, add a new file, upload a file, or restore a file by switching to the File Restore tool.
  4. If you want to work on an existing file on your website, look in the left side of the page to see your website directory structure and choose the area you want to work on: for example the Public directory.
  5. Click on a folder within your Directory Structure on the left.
  6. In the main window, click to highlight a file and then use the buttons at the bottom to Copy, Cut or Delete the file.
  7. Right-click on the highlighted file to see the file Properties, change or set Permissions, Rename the file, add a file to your archive, or Edit as Text.
  8. If you are editing the text on one of your pages, simply retype in the new window and click the Save button. But be careful not to inadvertently delete or modify any code unless you know what you’re doing.
  9. If you want to upload a new file, click the folder you want to upload to, then click the Upload button, then the Browse button. Find the file you want on your computer and click Open. Then click Upload files.

Restoring Your Website

EarthLink Web Hosting is easy to use. And as we’ve written about before, our free EasySiteWizard Pro tool is a fast and simple way to build a website, even if you have absolutely no technical experience and know nothing about building a website.web hosting - website file restore complete

But, as with any web hosting service, it is also possible to make mistakes when you’re working on your website.

Sometimes the mistakes are serious: you accidentally deleted important files or pages, or you inadvertently wrote over some content you needed to save. (This is especially likely if you are working on your website manually and uploading files via FTP rather than using the EasySiteWizard Pro tool.)

That’s why we strongly recommend that you alwayshave a local backup (i.e., on your computer) of your site and all its content.

Here are the backup strategies we recommend to help you safeguard your essential website files.

  1. Use your favorite FTP client to download a complete backup of all your website’s content. The File Manager Pro tool (in the Manage Site section of your Web Hosting Control Center) can be used to download individual files to y our computer, but not whole directories or multiple files.
  2. Keep your website backup stored locally on your work or home computer, or at an off-site storage location.
  3. Create a backup schedule and keep backing up your website regularly according to your schedule (how often you should backup varies depending on how often you make changes to your website). Rapidly changing data should be backed up more frequently.

If you’ve kept up on your local website backups and you make a mistake, the fix is as simple as FTPing the files you need from your computer back to your website.

Using the File Restore Tool

If you don’t have a backup, all may not be lost. Your EarthLink Web Hosting Control Center has an easy-to-use File Restore tool that can help you restore your website content from pre-defined time periods (6 hours ago, 24 hours ago, 48 hours ago, etc.).

Please note: it is not possible to ensure that all your files will be recoverable. And you should also be aware that, if you are using File Restore to restore your website, it will overwrite existing files if they have the same filenames as the restored content.

Here’s how to use File Restore:

  1. Sign into your Web Hosting Control Center at with your EarthLink Web Hosting domain name, username, and password.
  2. On the Manage Site tab, click the File Restore file restore tool in web hosting control center
  3. At the bottom of the page, use the drop-down menu to select a time-based backup of your site that you think will have the file you wish to restore (your most recent choice may be from a few minutes to 6 hours ago).
  4. Click the Next button.
  5. From the list on the left, select the file that you want to restore and click on the gray dot (the dot will turn green when the file is selected). You can repeat this process for other files you wish to restore.
  6. Click the Restore button.
  7. You’ll see a message letting you know that you are restoring a file and warning you about overwriting other files. Click the Next button to continue restoring your files.
  8. You’ll see a final confirmation (big green checkmark) that your file restore is complete and a list of files restored. At this point, you can click a link to view your File Restore history or to go back and restore additional files.

We hope you never need it, but it’s good to know File Restore is there to back you up.

Now, what are you waiting for? Get started backing up your website.

How to Manage Your Domain with the EarthLink Web Hosting Control Center

Domain names are such an important part of business web hosting that web hosting is often called domain hosting or domain web hosting.

We’ve previously posted about the best domain names for SEO, branding and online success, how to choose a domain name, step by step, and why you should buy multiple version of your domain name.

Domain Web Hosting - How to Manage Your Domain in Web Hosting Control CenterToday we’ll cover how you can manage your domain in the EarthLink Web Hosting Control Center.

To get started, go to our Web Hosting Control Center at and sign in with your domain name, user name and password. Then click Manage Domain from the top navigation. Depending on the status of your domain, you’ll see six to nine icons representing all your domain name management options.

  1. DNS Records
  2. Change Domain Password
  3. Manage Nameservers
  4. Manage Domain Contacts
  5. Lock/Unlock Domains
  6. Domain Monitor Settings
  7. Domain Guard Settings
  8. Domain Redirect
  9. Add Subdomain

DNS Records: First, the warning: you probably shouldn’t  change DNS settings unless you really know what you’re doing. If you make a mistake, your entire domain could be inaccessible for up to 72 hours. Ouch! If you’re not scared off, the DNS manager makes it easy to make changes to your zone file, which allows you to set up domain redirects, add subdomains, and add email servers to your domain. Add or delete MX Records, A Records and CNAME Records.

Change Domain Password: This one’s very simple: click this icon to change the password for your domain. The Transfer Authorization Code of your domain will be set to match your domain password.

Manage Nameservers: Click this icon to manage all the nameservers on your domain. If your domain is locked, you’ll need to unlock it first before you can change any of your nameservers.  Luckily that Lock/Unlock Domains tool is in the same Manage Domain section of the Control Center.

Manage Domain Contacts: This tool lets you make changes to the contact information associated with your website. Click the checkbox above the contacts form if you want to use the same person as your Registrant, Administrative, and Technical contact; otherwise enter unique contact information for each type.

Lock/Unlock Domains: To prevent your domain name from being hijacked, you may want to click here and lock your domain. If it’s already locked, click here to unlock if you need to change your nameservers or transfer to another domain registrar.

Domain Monitor Settings: Domain Monitor is a complete, unmetered domain status monitoring tool. It lets you monitor the daily status of any domain and get daily email updates when one or more of your domain names changes status.

Domain Guard Settings: Domain Guard lets you know each time a new domain is registered that is similar to yours. This can help you protect your trademarks, copyrights, and brand.

Domain Redirect: This tool makes it simple to redirect pages or directories on your website to other locations. You choose whether you want them to be 301 redirects (permanent redirect that’s best for SEO) or a 302 temporary redirect. You can also specify Global Redirection of your domain to one version ( or, which is also beneficial for SEO.

Add Subdomain: Create a new subsection of your website that replaces the www domain prefix in your URL instead of appearing after the domain.

For example, the domain has several subdomains (support, webmail, myaccount, control, etc.):

Simply enter any keyword you want to use as a subdomain and click the Add Sub-Domain button.

That’s all there is to it.

And remember, you don’t have to do it all yourself. You can add an assistant to your web hosting account to help you manage your domain.
